The Evolution of Southport: A Historic Journey Through The Jewel of The Gold Coast
Nestled on the stunning coastline of Queensland, Australia, the suburb of Southport is a testament to the rich history and growth of the Gold Coast region. The year 1823 marked a significant turning point with the arrival of the British explorer John Oxley. It was during his exploration of the region that he named the Nerang River. But it wasn’t until the 1840s that European settlement began to take root, with loggers attracted by the area’s lush forests. It was originally known as Nerang Creek Heads. It was named Southport because it was the southernmost port in the colony of Queensland.
A Glimpse of the Fishing Village Era
As the 19th century progressed, the region’s potential for agriculture and fishing became apparent. Southport began to establish itself as a fishing village, with small huts and cottages dotting the landscape. Fishing became an important part of the local economy and the village began to grow organically around the water’s edge.

Frederick Loder, 1860-1869
Fredrick was a member of the Southport Town Council for a single term. Loders Creek is an 8.3-kilometre-long stream and tidal creek that flows through the suburb of Southport on the Gold Coast in south-east Queensland, Australia. It is named after the Loders family, who were early settlers in the area. The creek is part of the Broadwater estuary catchment.
The Rise of Infrastructure and Tourism
The arrival of the railway in the late 1800s was a turning point in Southport’s growth. The ease of access provided by the railway spurred further development, transforming the town into a holiday destination of choice for many Australians. Grand hotels and guesthouses sprang up along the coastline, catering to tourists eager to experience the beauty of the Gold Coast.

The general store was established in 1879. Andrews’ store served as a house, land, and estate agent, and carried a large and assorted stock of groceries, drapery, millinery, boots, shoes, brushware, tinware, ironmongrey, glassware, and cutlery.

On 5 April 1915, the entire area that would become the central business district of Surfers Paradise was auctioned off. Government Road, at the bottom of the picture, later became Ferry Road and then Cavill Avenue.
The future Ferny Avenue, Pacific Highway and Orchid Avenue ran parallel to The Esplanade and the area was bounded to the north by the future Elkhorn Avenue. The future Chevron Island was connected to Southport and Mr Hope’s Island later became Macintosh Island and then Paradise Waters.

The service was initially limited to the Southport area, but when the Jubilee Bridge opened in 1925, Elliott extended the service to Main Beach and Surfers Paradise.
