Captain Cook discovered Point Danger and Mount Warning in 1770.

The first accurate map of the Gold Coast was produced in 1842 by Robert Dixon, an English surveyor. At the time, Queensland was not yet a state but part of New South Wales.

In 1845 there were only 1,599 white people in what would become Queensland.

In 1851 a public meeting was held to consider the separation of Queensland from New South Wales. Queen Victoria agreed and on 6 June 1859 signed Letters Patent establishing the new colony of Queensland. On the same day, an Order-in-Council gave Queensland its own constitution.

By 1861, Queensland’s population had grown to 32,838.

In 1885, Governor Musgrave of Queensland built a seaside home near Southport, setting the trend for the coast to become a fashionable resort for the wealthy and influential.

Southport was incorporated as a town in 1902 with a population of 1230. It became not only a resort but also the commercial centre of the South Coast. Hotels were built to accommodate the growing number of visitors.

In 1925, pioneer developer Jim Cavill built the Surfers Paradise Hotel in an area known as Elston.

In 1933, Jim Cavill and the people of Elston successfully lobbied to change the name of Elston to Surfers Paradise and Australia’s most famous beach resort was born.

In 1936 an emergency airstrip was built at Coolangatta for planes flying between Sydney and Brisbane. According to The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, the Gold Coast Airport is now Australia’s sixth busiest airport by passenger movement.

In the late 1940s, Brisbane journalists began referring to the coast south of Brisbane as the “Gold Coast”. This was due to the post-war property boom, which made it a popular place to buy and sell land.

The seaside resorts of the South Coast (now the Gold Coast) became well known to the thousands of Australian and US servicemen who came for recreation during World War II.

Development on the Gold Coast increased rapidly in the 1950s. Serviced holiday apartments and shopping centres were built. The canal estates of Paradise Island, Chevron Island and the Isle of Capri were some of the first major modern developments.

As the tourist industry grew, local businesses began to incorporate the term “Gold Coast” into their names. In 1958, the South Coast City Council was renamed the Gold Coast City Council. The Queensland Government declared the Gold Coast a city on 16 May 1959.

The Gold Coast’s first high-rise building, Kinkabool, a now heritage-listed apartment building at 32-34 Hanlan Street, Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by John M. Morton of Lund Hutton Newell Black & Paulsen and built by J D Booker Constructions (Gold Coast) Pty Ltd between 1959 and 1960. It was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 February 2009.
